Team GB Paralympic Athlete: Adam Knott
Variety, the Children’s Charity, is so proud to be able to support talented young disabled athletes in their quest for sporting greatness and as the London 2012 Paralympics has just started, we’re sharing some of the Team GB athlete interviews of those we have assisted with funding.
First up, 17 year old Goalball ace, Adam Knott.
Who / what inspired you to take on your sport?
My Mum and Dad always encouraged me and my brother to take part in multiple sports. By the age of three I had learnt how to swim and in any spare moment, we were trying out something new. There are not many sports I haven’t tried.
When did you realise your disability was not a barrier?
It’s hard to say really. When you’ve never had perfect sight, you never know any different. I just try to be the best that I can.
What keeps your motivated?
Today it’s being as prepared as I can be for the London 2012 Paralympics. Going forward, it is knowing that I can achieve so much more in sport – only being 17 means that my career has just started.
How has sport made a difference to your life?
Immeasurable, really. Being involved in elite sport has taught me so much about my body, nutrition and physiology, I have been able to visit different countries and had the opportunity to meet hundreds of people, and share my experiences. Without sport this may not have been possible.
What would you say to inspire other young people who face barriers to take part in sport?
It’s not about what others think of you, it’s about how much you enjoy the sport that you participate in. Always be prepared to give it your best and if you can say that you have, then the barriers are for others and not you. The sport you play today may not be the sport you play tomorrow, but don’t be scared to give it a try.
What are your aspirations long-term?
London will be first Paralympic Games – I don’t want it to be my last!
How would you describe ‘success’?
Knowing that I gave it my best.
Everyone at Variety wishes Adam and the rest of the Goalball team all the very best and can’t wait to watch him action!
