Jacob
Jacob was born 32 weeks prematurely and by the time he was six to seven months old, it became clear that he wasn’t meeting typical developmental milestones. At just one year old, Jacob was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, a condition affecting all four of his limbs.
“My condition is something that you are born with, this affects me mainly in a physical way. I am a full-time wheelchair user and I have never been able to walk, this condition also affects my gross and fine motor skills meaning I need assistance with day-to-day activities like getting dressed, personal care, and food preparation. It also mildly affects some of my cognitive functions. Some of the challenges I’ve faced are accessibility issues, and finding social activities and leisure activities to participate in with similar peers.”
Jacob’s early years were filled with many challenges, but he soon found a passion for sports and wheelchair rugby, which truly captured his heart. However, excelling in the sport required a specialised chair – one that would allow him to play comfortably, without pain, and perform at his best.
Without the right equipment, sports can be an uphill battle for disabled athletes. Standard chairs are often uncomfortable and can lead to aches, making it difficult to focus on the game. But thanks to Variety, Jacob received a custom-fitted rugby wheelchair, designed to support his abilities and enhance his performance.
“Now, I can play without pain and just enjoy the game. The chair has made a massive impact on my life as it allows me to be involved in and play the sport I love. Not only do I love playing the sport, but it gives me a sense of belonging, with a group of people who share the same challenges in life as me and I feel it has made me a more confident person.”
For Jacob, sports is more than just a pastime – it’s a way of life. With the right support and equipment, he’s able to push his limits and thrive. His story is a testament to the power of accessibility, opportunity, and the belief that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.
“Sports has changed my life and sport is my life.”
