What we do

In the UK there are more than 1.3 million disabled children and young people, and nearly four million children living in poverty. Variety exists to improve the lives of these children.

We provide practical, tangible help that makes an immediate difference to children and young people aged 18 and under. This includes grants for specialist disability equipment and wheelchairs that aren’t available through statutory services; adapted, accessible transport for SEND schools and other non-profit organisations through our Sunshine Coaches programme; and memorable day trips through our Great Days Out programme.

Please note that, due to the pandemic and its effects on fundraising, we are not currently accepting applications from organisations for equipment or wheelchair grants. Our Sunshine Coach programme remains unaffected. We would also advise individual applicants that, due to the pandemic, we have less control over timeframes, making it difficult for us in certain circumstances  to team up with other charities to co-fund equipment grants and wheelchairs. We do, of course, welcome contributions from applicants towards the equipment where possible. This situation will hopefully change within the next six-to-nine months, so please watch this space for future updates.

How Variety supports families

We know that the costs of raising a disabled child are high. On average, families with a disabled child have outgoings that are £600 a month higher than those of families with non-disabled children.

That’s why we part-and-fully fund wheelchairs and specialist equipment for children and young people aged 18 and under who have a recognised disability or long-term health condition. From diabetes monitors to specialist car seats and powered wheelchairs to sensory equipment, we’re here to help.

How Variety supports schools and organisations

We support SEND schools and units, mainstream schools and PRU’s, youth clubs, sports clubs, hospitals, hospices and other non-profit organisations that work with children and young people aged 18 and under.

We provide specially adapted accessible transport in the form of our Sunshine Coaches, memorable and life-enhancing experiences through our Great Days Out Programme and grant funding for wheelchairs and specialist equipment. We typically fund sensory rooms, interactive IT and classroom hoists but consider applications for all forms of specialist equipment.
