Variety’s Northern Region hosted a dinner for two hundred guests at the Hilton, Newcastle Gateshead to honour three time gold medallist, Paralympian, Stephen Miller. His hugely successful sporting career has resulted in twenty five international medals. He was joined by family, friends and fans to receive Variety’s highest accolade; a special edition Gold Heart Award.

Stephen, from Cramlington, was born with cerebral palsy. He has represented his country at five consecutive Paralympic Games – including London 2012 where he captained the male athletics team. Now the three time gold medallist club thrower has been recognised by Variety, for his inspirational life-story and ongoing support to both the charity and the local disability sport sector.

During the evening’s entertainment, video tributes were played from Alan Shearer, Jonathan Edwards and Steven Taylor. The event was expertly hosted by Jeff Brown.

Stephen commented:

“I am flattered to be presented with this award and am extremely thankful that organisations like Variety exist to help children with disabilities. It was great to see so many familiar faces together in one place, not only to have a good night and let their hair down but to raise money for children and families who truly need it.”

The evening started with a drinks reception, sponsored by Sintons Law, based in Newcastle. Guests were entertained by popular regional musician and ‘The New Face of Swing’, Glen Roughead, performing alongside The Paul James Band.

Pop Idol’s Jo Birchall also sang her new single, the proceeds of which she is donating to Variety.

Silent auction prizes included a match, spent in an Executive box, at St James Park and Stephen’s own 2004 Athens Paralympic shirt, both of which contributed to the overall funds raised of £3,000.

Tony Thornton, Chairman of Variety Northern Region commented:

“Stephen is an inspirational individual in everything he has achieved. Not only is he a gold medalist but he is also a web developer, a motivational speaker and the Managing Director of SMILE Through Sport. He is an inspiration within the field of athletics and has given many local children the motivation they need to achieve success
